Big Creek Greenway

The Big Creek Greenway connects Cumming, Alpharetta, and Roswell and spans 26 miles. It is a paved trail that is currently open in three disconnected sections with the exception of a gap of a couple miles in northeast Alpharetta and another short gap that lie north of Cumming. It is a nicely shaded multi-use trail that is mostly flat and has a lot of scenic views of Forsyth and Fulton Counties.

The Big Creek Greenway is mostly a 12-foot wide concrete path that goes through the woods along Big Creek. Part of it is located in Alpharetta, Georgia.  The greenway provides a wonderful setting for walking, jogging, biking, and inline roller blading. There are dirt mountain bike trail located on the east side of the creek, about 2/5 mile south of Webb Bridge Road.

Mile zero for Alpharetta’s portion of the trail begins at the City Limits of Alpharetta and Roswell. The Alpharetta portion ends at the Marconi Trail head. Mile markers that are present only reflect the distance on the main trail. Connectors, boardwalks, and spurs are not calculated.

The concrete trail is approximately 9 miles and goes along Big Creek running parallel to North Point Parkway, from Windward Parkway at Marconi Drive on the north end to Mansell Road on the south end. There is a soft mulch trail that encircles a large wetland that is between Mansell Road and Haynes Bridge Road. Wildlife such as deer, blue heron, Canadian geese, and ducks can be observed in this preserved water setting.

The trail is considered a moderately challenging route and it takes an average of four hours and ten minutes to complete. The Big Creek Greenway is a very popular area for road biking, trail running, and birding so visitors are most likely to  encounter other people while exploring the trail. The trail is open year-round and is a beautiful place to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome on the trail, but they must be on a leash.

The trail encompasses marshy areas so it is prone to flooding, which can make the trail inaccessible in some places. Visitors should check the trail’s website for updates on its condition. The City of Alpharetta partnered with Zagster, Inc in 2016 to provide free bike share for Big Creek Greenway users. Bikes were able to be rented for up to 3 hours free of charge. Stations were located at 4 stops along the Big Creek Greenway. This bike program was discontinued in May of 2020. Restrooms are available on the trail.
